Yes, SEO contests are stupid, and I never really expected to be taken up on this, but I was, and I think I owe Jody Nimetz a flapjack or two.
Enquiro has a pancake breakfast every year to raise money for local charities. We'll be having it tomorrow. About a week ago I was walking past Jody's desk and I facetiously said "you have one week to get us ranking number one for pancake breakfast". Well, Jody took me up on it. The next day he uploaded the page and started collecting link love (or stealing it, as I found out what happens when I give Jody and Manoj Jasra access to my blog!). To be honest, I'm a little removed from the good old days of "roll up your sleeves" SEO, so I thought it was a long shot at best. I mean, ranking for David Pasternack is one thing, but I thought "pancake breakfast" would be a little tougher, especially in one week.
Well, one week later, Jody's page is #7 in Google (across all data centers) for "pancake breakfast" and #5 in Yahoo. And he's still got about 15 hours to go. I have to be more careful what I say around Jody, or I could be ranking for "miserable failure*" before I know it. And Matt Cutts, if you're reading this, don't you dare knock us out of the top 10 before tomorrow morning!
By the way, if any of you are in the neighborhood tomorrow, drop by and have a pancake on us. We're collecting for the Kelowna's Womens Shelter!
*Note: Actually, I am pretty excited that according to Google, I'm now the #10 "Gord" in the world and the #4 "Hotchkiss"!
